Time to Rest! A Seasonal Storage Guide for Your Wool

When the season changes, your wool pieces deserve a proper rest too — a little care now means they’ll be just as soft and ready next winter.

Clean before you store

Never put away a worn piece without cleaning or airing it first. Body oils, food residue, and odours — even ones you can’t detect — can attract pests and cause yellowing over months in storage. Follow our Wool Care Guide, and make sure the item is completely dry before it goes away; damp wool risks mildew in storage.

Fold, don’t hang

Just like when drying, hanging knitwear for months at a time lets gravity slowly stretch it out of shape. Fold your pieces and store them flat, in a drawer or box, instead.

Choose the right container

  • For most pieces: breathable cotton garment bags or acid-free tissue-lined boxes let the wool breathe and avoid trapping any residual moisture.
  • Avoid long-term storage in fully sealed plastic bags for everyday storage — trapped moisture can lead to mildew over time.
  • Exception: if you’re storing in an area with a known moth risk, a sealed or vacuum bag with a moth deterrent inside can offer stronger protection — see Accidents Happen! for the full moth-prevention picture.

Natural moth deterrents

Cedar blocks or rings and lavender sachets tucked into your storage box are simple, effective, and pleasant-smelling. Refresh them every few months, as the scent (and their effectiveness) fades over time. For full moth protection and what to do if you spot damage, see Accidents Happen!

Where to store

  • Choose a cool, dry, dark spot. Avoid attics and basements if they’re prone to humidity or big temperature swings.
  • Keep wool out of direct sunlight — prolonged exposure can fade colours.

Check in occasionally

Once or twice during the off-season, take your pieces out, give them a shake and some fresh air, and have a quick look for any early signs of pests. A few minutes now can save your favourite piece later.

Ready to pack away for the season? You know what to do. See you next winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store wool clothes over summer?

Clean and fully dry the item first, fold (don’t hang) it, and store it in a breathable bag or box in a cool, dry, dark place.

Can I store wool in plastic bags?

Breathable cotton bags or boxes are better for everyday storage – sealed plastic can trap moisture and lead to mildew. Sealed bags are only recommended as an extra moth-prevention measure in high-risk areas. See Accidents Happen! for more.

How do I keep moths away while my wool is in storage?

Use cedar or lavender sachets, make sure items are clean before storing, and check on stored pieces occasionally. Full prevention and treatment guide: Accidents Happen!
