Getting the right hat size can feel like guesswork when you’re shopping online — especially for handknitted pieces that don’t follow standard S/M/L charts. Here’s exactly how to measure, and what our sizing actually means for you.
Why hat sizing works differently with handknitted wool
Unlike mass-produced hats, our wool beanies aren’t stiff or fixed in shape. Hand-knitted from soft, stretchy wool, they naturally mould to your head over the first couple of wears — which is why we don’t offer separate small/medium/large sizes. Instead, each hat comfortably fits a range of head sizes right out of the box.
How to measure your head circumference
All you need is a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler):
- Wrap the tape around your head, about 1–2 cm above your eyebrows and ears — this is the widest, most natural point.
- Keep the tape snug but not tight — it should sit the way a hat would.
- Note the measurement in centimetres. If you’re using string, mark where it meets, then measure that length against a ruler.
That’s it — one number is all you need.
What our 48–54 cm range means for you
Our hats comfortably fit head sizes from 48 to 54 cm. If you’re within this range, you’re set — the wool will settle into a fit that feels like it was made for you, literally.

Will the hat stretch out over time and become too loose?
No — the wool holds its shape well after the initial settling period. It moulds once, not continuously.
What if I’m right on the edge of the range (e.g. 54.5 cm)?
You’ll likely still be comfortable — the range already includes wool stretch. If in doubt, message us before ordering.
